Dear Parents,

Welcome to our Child Nutrition Program!  Our aim is to provide you with attractive, appetizing and nutritious breakfast and lunch choices each day.  Wake County is very progressive in offering students the opportunity to serve their own meals.  Self service will allow your child to learn about making wise choices, improve motor shills, build self-esteem, and receive high quality foods.

Very young children can participate in self-serve.  They may require assistance while learning and will occasionally need help with some foods.  Our cafeteria managers offer a training program to help students learn about food and the self-serve program.  We wrap or pre-portion many foods to keep little fingers from touching them.  We use long handled utensils and change them frequently.  Our serving line has a child-sized sneeze guard to assure that foods are safe and sanitary.  The Wake County Department of Health and Human Services has approved the planning and implementation of this self-serve program.

School breakfast and lunch offers foods from all levels of the Food Guide Pyramid.  At lunch your child many choose three, four or five items including 1 serving of meat or protein, 2 fruits and/or vegetables, 1 bread and 1 milk.  You can help by reviewing the breakfast and lunch menu with your child before school each day.  Other items such as cookies, cake, pretzels, bottled water, or ice cream may be available for additional purchase.

For your convenience you may pre-pay for breakfast and lunch by the week, month or year with a check payable to the school cafeteria!  In addition, we offer an automated payment plan that allows you to authorize a bank draft or credit card payment to the cafeteria automatically each month.  You many pick up a form at the school or print one from our web site at www.wcpss.net.

Prepayment will assure that all money is available for a complete school meal.  You may also apply money to an a la carte account for purchases other than the complete meal such as additional servings of the menu items, desserts or extra beverages.

Our staff registered dietician monitors our menu to provide at least one-third of the Recommended Daily Allowance for key nutrients and to meet the Department of Agriculture’s Dietary Guidelines for Americans.  We offer Winner’s Circle Healthy dining meals that are high in complex carbohydrates to be sure to keep the calories high enough for growing children, while cutting the fat to less tan 30 percent of calories.  We offer fresh fruits or vegetables, skim and low fat milk, and other daily choices in addition to those on the published menus.  Also, when you read your child’s menu, remember, what seems like high fat food many not be.  Take cheeseburgers, potato rounds or pizza for example.  We oven bake instead of deep fry, the ground beef is lean, and the cheese, mayonnaise, and salad dressing are reduced in fat or fat-free!  These are just a few of the ways we make sure the food is good and good for your child.

We look forward to helping you meet the daily nutritional needs of your student.  Please come have breakfast and/or lunch at school often this year!

Sincerely,
